Android Version 1.6?! (as in HTC hero?)

I was just curious.. I'm not well versed with Android devices, but i saw the android viewer needing Android 1.6.. isn't 1.6 a really old OS (by mobile standards). I have an old HTC hero that I believe is running that.. just made me wonder if the app store for Android works on devices that old.
Of course the Hero has no touch screen so even if it did run i couldn't play my game since it requires a touch screen... but thats not the concern.. i'd just love to see if it would run at all.. not worried if it would play.. or to think someone with an older device of that 1.6 generation can play games at a decent frame rate..
My assumption was that something like 2.1-2.2 or newer would be required... the thought that such an old OS will run GS games is pretty neat.
