Help with making a character walk with joystick and button to shoot

I checked out that template with the pre made joystick and buttons but i can't seem to understand it can anyone please help me? I need help ASAP please my app can't function without this main feature.
Can anyone help me with just making my character walk and even if it's not with a joystick or button?
