Good equivalent to Adobe Illustrator?

JadarStudiosJadarStudios Member Posts: 264
Hey guys. My Illustrator trial is up now, and I was wondering, Is there a good equivalent to it? I've so far seen Inkscape, VectorDesigner, and Sketch. The latter two are in the app store. Has anyone had a good experience with any, or used them for games? Thanks!

    Is that what you use?

Ultimately there is no equivalent as Illustrator stands in a league of one for all sorts of reasons. If you don't mind the interface from hell then Inkscape is very powerful but if you need a beautiful interface to create beautiful work then go with trials of Sketch (DrawIt might be more suited to App dev) and Vector Designer to see how you get on.

Yeah, i just don't have the 599 or what ever for Illustrator...I have Inkscape, but yes, the interface is not very intuitive... I don't think VectorDesigner is as good for app dev. I'll try Drawit, and come back with my "review." Thanks.

What's the difference between DrawIt and Sketch? Both are same dev...

Supposedly, by the end of the summer, Pixelmator is supposed to have vector editing. I bought version 1.x through the Mac App Store because supposedly I get version 2.0 free... and that's the version that's supposed to have vector editing.

Pixelmator is becoming my Adobe alternative. HA! It already replaced Photoshop...

I'm skeptical if Pixelmator is going to launch an update soon, but it's been great software so far. It's not like there's an annual subscription... HA HA... so I'm patiently waiting.

If Pixelmator comes out with vector, i'll probably get that since its like Illustrator and Photoshop all in one..... but right now I'm just looking around...

Ok, been playing around with Sketch for a while, here are my thoughts so far... When I started, I liked it. But now I am not so sure... when drawing points for lines, ones that are not far from the last one (like 5px up and down,) snap to a straight line from the last one... When you rotate things, there is no degree measure... And textures don't flip with the object they are applied to, and so on. So far I an having trouble finding things I do like in this program... The tutorials don't help so much cause they have such low volume.... One thing I like about it is that the boolean tools are easier to use than in Illustrator, but are to simple. Another thing I like is the shape functions... So overall, I'm not impressed.... I'll try DrawIt and see if that is better. (Also, If I come across something I lIke in Sketch, I'll post here too...)

My vote is for Inkscape. The interface isn't great, but you get used to it after a while, and you can make tons of stuff pretty easily once you do. I recently made this in inkscape in about 6, maybe 7 hours:

Some people don't like it, some do. for me, it works just fine.

@RKS I saw your new logo earlier today, I like it. I'll check out that one...
@Asymptoteell I'll give it a look again. That photo, did you draw it, or did Inkscape to the converting? Thanks!

Ok. I took a look at DrawIt, very strange. I do not get the idea for combining bitmap and vector.... EDIT: Can it do SVG?

And DrawIt uses normal picture effects on resizeable images.

Sorry, I was referring back to Xara... So on DrawIt, it uses vector tools, but makes them bitmap or something?

Yeah, I drew it, with a bunch of shapes and transparent shapes and such, but I think inkscape does have a conversion button, too. I know Illustrator does, and it works pretty well.

    No equal other than photoshop

Yeah, Photoshop's pixel based, but I'd suggest you try it (or it's free equivalent, GIMP) at least to see if that works better for you than vector based stuff. Personally, I can't draw in PS well at all, but lots of people make great stuff with it, so I guess, whatever floats your boat.

I use GIMP all the time, but like you said, I can't draw well in it at all too..... I'll try this Xara, its not free is it?

They must have changed the name, cause I can't find Extreme anywhere on the site. I found this site though.. http://www.xaraxtreme.org/ Is it vector software?
  • JadarStudiosJadarStudios Member Posts: 264
Ok, the other thing is, is Xara Xtreme vector based, or pixel based?

Ok, I'll look at it, but right now, I'm working with Inkscape (to test) and am wanting to know, is there a Illustrator like blend tool?

I have been working with coreldraw for 15+ years now... doing everything from product and graphic design to game art with it... If you get a version below the current one you usually can get it for little money on ebay and get a whole lot of tools with it - vector based Draw! [supporting multiple pages - a nice feature to do animations], bitmap based PhotoPaint [which also has the nice animation feature], a vector trace, font tool, etc.

It's not quite the league of Illustrator but as close as it gets and for my liking a lot faster to work with when it comes to grouping, animating and designing simple elements that are created for games and not print.

Ok, I've been working with Inkscape, and I found I like it a LOT. Best of all, its free!

A bit off topic but very unusual and ultra Maccy in some respects http://likethought.com/opacity/
