How To Determine The Correct Size of Your App

Hey guys,

I am just about finished with version 2.0 of iSubmarine, but I want to make sure the app's file size is below 20 MB so the user can download over a cellular network. However, there is no consistency with the game's file size. GameSalad Creator says my app is 10.4 MB. However, if I right click on the .ipa that is produced when I go to test my app on my device, it says something like 15 MB. Then when I am selecting the app to put on my phone within iTunes, it says my app is over 20 MB. So which is the correct size of the app, or how do I determine if Apple will say my app is below 20 MB? Thanks

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But if you publish your app and then zip it, that zip file should be your app size on iTunes.

You mean zip the .app or the .ipa?

the .app file, that's the one GameSalad sends you right?

Yes, GameSalad's servers give you a .app. The .ipa is the iTunes version. I think you are right though because I tested this with two of my other apps. One was exactly the same as the App Store version and the other was .2 MB off. If that is the case, I am holding at 16.8 MB . I just hope you are in fact right.

You can also help keep the size down by adding white screens instead of actual screenshots and icons in the publishing part in GS creator.

Actually, hang on a sec.

Just want to make sure I haven't made an incorrect assumption.

When you add an app in itunes-connect you upload screenshots and an icon.

Is this the icon that is used in itunes AND on the device?

(Or is the icon you add during the GS publishing process the one that shows up on the device? I thought that was just for the GS website so replaced it with a white square! Wouldn't want to have an app released with a white square for an icon!!!)

Can anyone clarify this?

The icon you insert while publishing with GS is the one that will show up on devices.

The icon you insert on ITC is the one that will be used on the Appstore to list your app.

Thanks for clarifying that Mark. I almost went and uploaded the LITE version of Honey Tribe with a nice white square for an icon!
