Noel over at Snappy Touch games has a blog post where he discusses sales trends and strategies he used for his Flower Garden app. He has graphs for the 10 months that the app has been in the store, and some interesting things stand out.
Sales didn't seem effective if the app didn't have visibility to begin with.
Conversely, Lite versions can be, if released months after initial drop-off.
In-App Purchases (IAP) made a HUGE difference (ie 3X the average daily revenue).
IAP were effective for both the Full and Lite versions.
Apple featured Flower Garden as a Staff favorite...10 months after launch.
Here's the full post. It's long, but lots of good stuff: http://gamesfromwithin.com/making-a-living-barely-on-the-iphone-app-store
