What device do you have?

I'm working on a game I'm absolutely in love with at the moment. I really mean that, and I hope it shows when it's released.

The problem is that it runs silky smooth on my 3GS, but like a dog on my iPod Touch 1st gen.

I've noticed the game kind of falls apart on the ipod when the player's powered up to shoot a certain number of shots.

I could compromise and make the powerups less, er, 'powerful'. But I've realised that I don't want to anymore.

So the next release will be 3GS only. I know it'll cut down potential sales, but I'm not really doing it to sell lots. It's a niche title at best, but one that I love and that I'm enjoying making.

So, after all that - what device do you have? And do you think it will become less important as more powerful models (post 3GS) become available? I noticed the latest GTA on iPhone is 3GS only - perhaps that might encourage people to upgrade?

Anyway, thoughts?

I have an 2nd gen iPod, iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS...

My games run pretty rough on the older devices, they are still playable, but certainly not as nice as the 3GS.

But yes, I try to look to the future as well. You can only support the older devices for so long...

I am jealous of software like Peggle, which runs flawlessly on every device, and every OS from 2.2. No loading times, etc... It's fantastic.

Also, to a certain point, I am not in control of how GameSalad performs on the older devices. I don't spawn many actors, I watch my texture sizes, not many Timers, etc... but after that I don't know what to do. I use GS because I can't program the lower level stuff, so I have to live with the performance.

But computers keep getting better and faster, devices keep getting faster, and GS will keep getting better and faster! So I'm not too worried.

    Good points there!

I'm hoping a later version of GS will let this ol' game live on older devices! Till then, 3GS only!

    what's cookin,

do what you love and decide how to 'best' represent it. especially if it's a niche game. don't compromise or you'll always regret it.

it won't be long before the 8g 3gs is the 'lowest' spec. apple never stands still for long.

but then you already know that... don't you. you naughty, time traveling minx.

oh yeah, i have a 2nd gen ipod touch. only because i refuse to buy an iphone in the country i currently reside.

Yeah, i have one of each (3gs,3g, touch 1 touch2)
My monster game is a dog on older ones too.

I almost feel like i should leave it free until GS speeds basic non 3d 4mb games up

Really frustrating considering my son plays the touch 1st gen and it runs all kinds of crazy 3d stuff just fine.

I really cant imagine it is something that wont be worked out. If not i would be really let down.

    One more thing...

    I notice this for performance
3gs and touch 2 are right about the same.
    3g pretty choppy
touch 1gen about as choppy but loading takes a little longer

I rock the 1gen iPod. I figure, if I can have a game running 30 fps on my old touch, everything better would run better.

That's very true KT, and up till now I've been compromising all my games so that they *do* run on a 1st gen.

But like I say, this new game just demands that I abandon that philosophy...

And while I'm at it, I've been thinking of sticking two fingers up at the 10MB limit too.

I never make things easy for myself ;)

1st Gen Touch and 3G. Hope to pick up the new phone and/or tablet when (and if) they are announced (or at least try and get my work to upgrade the phone).

The poll doesn't have an entry for 1st gen iPhone, but I still have my one. Danger Cats! plays fine on it.
