72.009 ppi?

matthowarthmatthowarth Member Posts: 76
grrrrrr

every piece of artwork in our game is 72 dpi when saved as a psd, yet when we save them as pngs they come out as 72.009. We've only just noticed this, some being much more blurry than others. Aparently it's a known issue with Photoshop (and has been for several years!!!!!!)

Has anyone else come unstuck with this and is there any 3rd party software that can convert our pngs back to 72 dpi dead en masse within GS?

thanks

Matt

Hi Matt: another way -- if you use Photoshop, instead of using Save As, used Save for Web. That way you'll get 72ppi exactly.

Photoshop Sucks sometimes. What I find anoying is that snapping to grids and guides sometimes sucks due to rounding of numbers (hope this is correct English)

ha, my problem is the fact it "un-rounds" my numbers.

Now I'm pretty sure that's not English, but you know what I mean!!

if you "save for web and devices" in photoshop, that will fix it as well

Hi Jon, the version of PS I use (CS2) only has save for web; what version do you use where they've added "...and devices" for interest?

    thanks Jon,

strangely, now I've re-saved the image, it is 40x40 (which I thought was a GS friendly number) 72 dpi image with transparency and still looks ok on the mac, but when viewed on the iphone (via the viewer) it's still very blurry.

No scaling of the actor going on, any thoughts?

sorry, I know this is a slight digression from the original question.

BTW the "and devices" is there in CS5.

    cheers

I think it came around with CS3. It's in CS4 I know for sure, but I think it came a little before that.

Thanks Calvin, Matt+SlickZero for info. I reckon my trusty old CS2, hanging on still with Snow Leopard, will be finally thwarted by Lion, then I'll have to upgrade...I wait to see.

    I'll bump Matt's question:

Check your actors position values in GameSalad, and make sure theyre full digit numbers.

If youve just dragged the actor into place, theres a good chance that it could be aligned to a fraction of a pixel...in which case it'll blur once its displayed on the device.

I've noticed actor coordinates that end in .5 too. Why would GS have/allow non-integer numbers for actor coordinates?

    Question.

PS shows my images as having 72 ppi. I did not save for web but used the Save As PNG. My images are a little blurry also on my IPAD in game. Thus, I suspect what I am looking at in PS showing 72 ppi is not the exact ppi but just a summary. Where can I go to actually see exactly the ppi for my images down to decimals?

Another thing to consider is the device you are using. Is it an iPhone 4? If so, your 40x40 image is being stretched to 80x80 on-screen pixels...which would cause some blur.

Does GameSalad actually use PPI data for anything? It seems like this problem couldn't have anything to do with PPI.

If GameSalad is using PPI information for something... what is it? It is completely irrelevant for the use of GameSalad. Why would GameSalad care if the image is 1 PPI, or 1,000 PPI? Pixels per inch OF WHAT?

So, if GameSalad is using PPI for something, I urge them to stop, and if they aren't, then just ignore PPI.

    Hi all,

sorry for the delay in respoding.

I have just found the problem. the one actor that doesn't look blurry has a much bigger (x2 at least) image, whereas the two blurry ones are just as big as the actor needs to be(40x40). All three actors are 40x40 so I would have thought it would be better to have the image the correct size, as there is no interpolation going on, but apparently not so.

thanks to you all for your input,

    Matt
