Free Art Tool Other Than Gimp?

I really, really don't like Gimp. It's too difficult to do a simple task with it. Are there any other good free tools? Please post one that supports transparency!

Anything that exports to PNG should support transparency, I believe. That said, I like Paintbrush for pixel graphics and Inkscape for vector type.

Try searching through the forums--you might dig up some posts that help.

In Paintbrush, how do you set the background to be transparent?

I've found that I have to use the paint bucket, and set the color transparency to be 0.

Honestly, it may take you a while, but learn gimp. It took me some time with gimp, but once you learn it, you can do some pretty amazing stuff. Gimp is definitely the best free one you will find. So much better than paintbrush

    Hey 11oclock,,
    steeler is right!

Take advantage of the fact that you, unlike us 10 years go, have the advantage of goggling.
There are many tutorials which take the pain out of gimping and, there are even books.

If you absolutely hate GIMP, you could always buy Pixelmator which costs a little but still very cheap for what you get.

I hope you can sort this out before you get too far into your project,
    xyloFUN

I mainly don't like Gimp because of the toolbar. With the image window selected, I have to click on the toolbar so I can click on the tools. Say I want to erase something. I click the eraser on the toolbar but it didn't select the eraser, just the toolbar. Thinking I have the eraser selected, I try to use it on my image. I end up doodling on my image! This is very frustrating!

Yes, the extra click takes time to get used to .... It would be cool if you had a WACOM ;-)

well the thing with the extra click, you can fix this in x11, open gimp and on top it says x11 go to that, then preferences then go to the Windows tab and check in "Click-through Inactive Windows" this way you only have to click once, the problem is within x11 which is how gimp runs not gimp itself.

How do you replace current opacity on the screen with a new opacity? I want to make one of my layers to be semi-transparent and I don't want to redraw the whole thing.

Oh, and I'm using Gimp again.

Well if you still have a version of your file save as .xcf or .psd you select the layer you want and then adjust the opacity at the top of the layer toolbox. if you only have it as a .png your outta luck unfortunately you cannot go back to layers once you have saved it as .png
