Hi, I've just released a little game to the App Store. It's about a pig named Herbert busting out of his pen, and on the hunt for truffles.

It's had some good reviews so far, including an article on Kotaku! http://ca.kotaku.com/5798009/the-story-of-a-pig-and-his-big-day-out

You can check out my site for some more info http://8x8pixels.tumblr.com/herbertsdayout or get it for free yourself at the App Store http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/herberts-day-out/id433310442?mt=8

I'd love to hear what you think of my little game!

Wow, that looks really fun and relaxing! It's nice to see a very original title made with GS. The pixel art is great too.

I love pixelart style. It's good to see some exploration/story games made with gamesalad.

Kotaku article is a big deal, really. It probably gave you a huge sale boost.

    Good job!

Really liked it. What program do you use to create the pixel art?

Thanks guys, your compliments are really appreciated! I was looking to make something casual that could be finished in a couple of minutes, and would put a smile on the player's face.

m456arcus - The simple exploratory concept is based on town scenes in older JRPG's. There's something to walking a character around a safe area, slightly interacting with the world, and collecting items.

jillians - You are! Oh, and your icon is great. Is it your art?

Jeff - Thanks man. It started at more of a SNES sprite size, and worked it's way back down to GBA by the end. A lot can be represented with very little sometimes. (At least I hope that's the case)

quantumsheep - I've used a few of your tips from these forums. Thank you.

kapser - Kotaku blew my mind! Luke Plunkett's article was reposted all over the place. The bump doesn't last all that long though once the article is pushed to the third page or so. It was a real high while it lasted.

jiffw - Glad you liked it! No special program, just Photoshop. I zoom in a far as it goes and use a one pixel pencil tool.

I'll let you all know when I have something worth showing for my next title.

How did you make the pixely graphics? GS always filters my graphics to look smooth when I re-size up. I want them sharp, not smooth.
  • calebhystadcalebhystad Member Posts: 22
jb15 - Yeah, I wish there was a way to keep them sharp too. I just scaled the original artwork to the sizes I needed, which was usually around 800%.

I take it to mean you resized it in seperate software (not GS)?

    Is this correct?
  • calebhystadcalebhystad Member Posts: 22
jb15 - That's right. I scaled them in Photoshop using a mode called Nearest Neighbor which doesn't blur the pixels. I still ended up scaling up and down a little in GS, but they were big enough that you don't really see it.
