Question about resolution

Hi all,
I am creating some graphics for icons and am struggling to get the resolution set correctly. Ideally I want to have something that will be published for iPhone4, iphone3Gs, iPad and Mac. What is the best way to do this? Do I need to create the highest res images for the Mac then compress them for each drop in resolution?
I have tried to take some of my images from photoshop into gamesalad but they are really grainy. I have created them at a fair resolution but they are looking awful once dropped in. They look ok in the images preview area (and when I double click on them). Any help would be really appreciated.
Many thanks,
LBG

I'll have a go. 72dpi seems quite low. I have resolution independance selected for my project but each scene still gives me a resolution of 480x320 instead of 960x640. I thought it would create the project at the higher resolution and then compress for the lower resolution at the end....
With RI you design everything as normal, when it's on the iphone4 it doubles everything and uses the higher res artwork. Do a search, there are some pretty indepth threads on how it works.
