Hi guys.

Anyone know if the 20meg limit for 3g transfers from the app store is for the .zip of teh app you upload, or the raw .app file?

Can't seem to find the info anywhere easily. :o(

Also.. what's everyone's opinions about how important it is

No clue on zip or app. Its important if it doesn't hurt the game Quality. You know if your right on the edge and theres something extra you've added that doesn't really add any value to the game. THen i'd say pull it out. but if your 10-20+Mb over don't even worry about it. Thats a lot of content to remove so theres a good chance you will hurt your games value by doing so.

looks like it may well be the zip...reading between the lines of this in the faq

    :

Why did Apple make my app file size larger than the .zip file I uploaded for my binary in iTunes Connect?
When your application is approved by Apple to sell on the App Store, it is encrypted for DRM purposes and re-compressed. When the encryption is added, the size of the compressed file will increase. The exact size of the increase will vary from app to app, however, the size increase can be large when the binary contains a lot of contagious zeros. We are unable to guarantee the size of your file after the encryption has been added.

iOS apps with a final size of up to 20MB can be downloaded over the 3G network. Larger iOS apps will require a Wifi connection.

FWIW my app was 29mb on GS adhoc, 18mb zipped and 17mb in the appstore :/

My next game is probably going over 20 MB. So, it's not critical. I think the big difference is if you're close to 20 MB. If your game is like 21 MB, then I think it's better to cut something out.

Basically, the size can change. If I'm remembering correctly, I sent Annoyed Tomatoes as a zip that was under 20 MB, but it was bigger than 20 MB when it hit the app store. Heh... I think it was 20.2 MB. So, you might want to leave some space.

Also... remove unnecessary stuff from your app, like unused images, actors, scenes and sound files. You might want to run your images through ImageOptim too. That seems to have dramatically reduced the size of my game and improved the loading times.

    Thanks guys.
Yeah, removed everything that's not needed, cut out all the chuff, and ran it through the GS optimizer.

An Ad Hoc build is 26.9 meg, but that zips down to around 17....so fingers crossed :o)

Because I play SO many iphone games, and have a load of music on my phone as well, I find that if a game is over 20MB I won't download it unless I'm *really* desperate to play it.

    It's purely to save space!

Of course, I do have some very big games on my phone - over 300MB in one instance. But the majority of the games are far, far smaller.

I'm hoping the new iphones will have a 64GB option!

    QS :D
