I finally clicked on the ipod icon under devices and clicked the button on the page that appeared. Looking bcak it seems like a no brainer but I was following the wiki so closely that I turned my brain off. I don't think activating your device was actually listed in the wiki but maybe I just missed it. thanks to everyone who helped me out!
