The "best" would be Houdini http://sidefx.com

    I LOVE cinema 4d.

It's easy to use and powerful, especially whenvit come to motion graphics. It is rather expensive, though.

They have a demo (full version but for noncommercial use) that I use that is good to try it out or to use just for fun.

    Here's their website:

Also, a good free alternative Is blender. It has more features and is free but is also much harder to use.

Whoops. I think my phone autocorrected it, or maybe a typo or something. I fixed it.

"Best" is the app you can afford and use well.

All the above give very good results and I would add that a lot of award winning tv 3d is done using Lightwave 3d. Very good with tv time constraints, I guess.

A free one is blender that gives good results but needs time to get into the UI.

I have limited knowledge in 3ds and Cinema 4d and both seem to be great. You can get 3ds for free as well if you are a student although it is pc only.

I know, that happens to me a lot as well! Especially on the iPad ..... I've given up replying in German because that is almost impossible.

    @Dethe,
I use C3D too, but only to render which it does amazingly well.

The most widely used in the game industry is 3DSMax. Second would be Maya. If you're ever planning on making game development a career you're going to want to pick one of those, as well as Photoshop for making the textures for your 3D models. They're both very powerful but can be pretty intimidating to learn, heh.

I like to use Strata 3D. Very powerful software and sometimes they have specials where you pick up the software for 99 bucks.

I actually have used this product since the 90's!

    Strata looks INCREDIBLE!

You take pictures of an object and it makes it into a textured 3d object!

Cheetah is GREAT. Excellent pricing, brilliant support team/community and the software is very intuitive.

There's also good old Bryce ;-) Which can do a lot of simple renders. Just not advanced modeling
the free version of which no longer works on mac OSX? But the registered one is not that much.

You speak of Strata Photo? Looks great!
    But it's $695
3d software is so overpriced... It's a major problem for the independent developer.
    C4d $995

Guess I'll give that Cheetah a look ;-)
There is also Hash Animation Master

    Franz,
back in the days, I used to have a year subscription for AM but it wasn't my "thing".

I don't think you can go wrong with Cheetah3D. It's even in the Mac App Sore and Martin frequently releases quality updates. The keyword here is "quality".
He has a roadmap leading up to version 6 and the best part is that you can model in any app you like (in addition to C3D) and then bring everything in for texturing and rendering.

C3D saved me a few times in the last few weeks because it is the only app that has a render manager which keeps! the images you render so should you need one later (and trust me, you will), they are there to grab again.
Head over to the forum http://cheetah3d.com/forum (there are also German users) and someone will always help you ... just like here :)
