Which Wacom Tablet Should I get?

AsymptoteellAsymptoteell Member Posts: 1,362
I want to start getting into the world of graphic design to make graphics for my games. I'm currently using Inkscape (I can't afford illustrator).

I'm thinking about getting a wacom tablet, but I'm not sure which one I should get.

Probably either Bamboo, Bamboo Pen, or Bamboo Fun.

Any input would be greatly appreciated especially as to how much difference the size of the tablet makes.

Oh, and here's a link to the website with the tablets:

The three cheapest ones are the same size so it just depends on what software you want with it. The expeaive one is bigger but i have been told it's not needed unless you are hard core artist. I bight my wife the pen&touch for Xmas and she seems to really like it

Also check amazon for pricing cause it was cheapest through them

    Thanks, tenrdrmer.

I was mostly wondering what difference size makes, so it's good to know that small ones will work well. I'll probably get the pen and touch.

While I am far from being a professional, I can tell you that the size is basically representative of the working surface area that you'll have. With a smaller working area you'll need to lift the pen more often as you get to the edge of the touch area.

I bought the WACOM Bamboo Fun & Touch before I got the iMac and to be honest, I CAN NOT WORK WITHOUT IT!!!

ok, besides how amazing it is, it practically pays for itself because if your mac is like mine, it eats batteries for breakfast which is not cheap. But with the tablet, i only use the mouse with GameSalad. The rest is pretty much pen and keyboard.

I love mine, the drivers are good and the only thing I have with it is that I need the mouse to move over to the second monitor but I'm not complaining as there is no win/win situation and i only run FTP and less important stuff on the second monitor.

The Bamboo fun and touch is worth every penny!

The software that comes with it i've never installed ... for some reason the light version of photoshop elements never installed? go figure ...

It looks like I can get a better deal on Intuos 4 than bamboo fun on Amazon. This seems like the best move for the money.

yeah, the Intuos stuff is high end ... everyone who has one loves them! You can't go wrong if those are within your budget :)

I haven't messed with my wife's much but she said the active area is scaled to the full screen size so you don't have to lift your finger or pen at all to move across the full screen. Im not sure how that works or maybe thats not while using graphics software but like I said just what I have been told I cant confirm it. I did talk to several people who use the pen and touch and they said they had no need for the bigger pad. They used for various things from photo editing to art.
I ask this same question back before christmas heres that thread may provide more info for you. I do remember a common agreement amongst the users that the Intuos stuff was better.

It's a stretch, but $87 (65 euros) off seems like the right price. The size differences aren't that much (this is the small intuos, by the way) and the performance seems better, so for cheaper than the Bamboo Fun, it seems right for me.

I recently got the Intous4 Small for my 12yr old son and he loves the thing. Heck i love the thing..
Best deal was to keyword Wacom Intous4 Small on amazon and I bought the Factory Refurbished one to save money.. only $141. It arrived like it was brand new, no scratches, clean box, looks fantastic and I decided to
go this route over the bamboo fun because the specs were better. I figured if i'm going to buy one of these things I want it to last and have all the functionality to grow into.

    good luck with your purchase.
