Interested in making artwork for sale

As the title says. I'm interested in making artwork to sell. I've never really sold artwork online before (normally I just did gallery stuff and paintings). I could use the money, but my window is limited. I'm extremely busy studying programming in a fast-track program at the moment. I have 2 weeks in December, where I could breakout my tablet and draw up a storm. I also have 2 (possibly just 1 as I have to rework the other) title I'm also working on, so it's a narrow window, but doable.

I'm building a new website for myself both for games and for my portfolio. I'm wondering how much interest there would be if I made artpacks. For instance - A pirate theme: Assets would be, characters, multiple props from ships to cannons, swords, etc, backgrounds, platforms...

Space would be fun: Astronauts, aliens, ufos, heavenly bodies, backgrounds, lunar/planetary landscapes, space vehicles + interiors of vehicles and space stations.

Most likely iphone game development is not going to make me much money... it is a tough market. I wouldn't mind putting a nice site together and making an artpack every so often and putting it up.

Basically the idea is, make an artpack and depending on the hours it took sell it for a reasonable amount. I'd say at my skill and from what I've seen others charge, my going rate would be about 20 - 25/hour. I don't want to ask too much for artwork, but at the same time, I want to be fair.

And, to clarify, an artpack that I would make would be a buy once option, but I would keep the right obviously of keeping the images in my portfolio. I would never use any artwork that I sold however, in my own games.

ADDED: Oh and I don't mean to advertise myself on GS here (without permission). I know that Gendai is interested in selling art assets too... if I read right a few days ago. I would definitely be interested in selling artwork to Gendai as well. :) Anyway, if permission was needed first, feel free to edit this or take down. I'm not one to break rules.

@Snow... i think what you propose is a good idea and i don't see why you shouldn't do it... some people are good at logic and design but don't have the artistic skills so if your prices are good then you would be an asset... go for it:)

    Sounds like a great idea!

I have been dieing for someone to sell art packs. That is the biggest hurdle for me as a non-artistic person. I can't even think of how people create game art. I love to do the GS stuff, but I always get stuck b/c I can't come up with the art to match the idea.

Sorry for the late response. Internet at home is down... polar bears chewing on the cables again.

Thanks for the feedback. If I made artpacks, what would be expected? Would you just want large artworks that can be cut up and downsized or complete sets where you may have individual background objects as individual files as well? As in terms of sets, if say I did an astronaut, instead of just one image, you'd have several from large raw vector (svg) to 300dpi, 72dpi pngs, etc.

I think if I did just svgs, or even fla's for whoever prefers editing them in flash (changing colors, adjusting outlines, etc), that would work well too.

If you had svg files, then you can completely resize them and export them as pngs with Inkscape - which is free and also automatically sizes the exported image to the exact dimensions of a single selection or an entire artwork.

If you have an art pack I would definitely say they need to be vectors, because you never know for what use they will be used or the size needed.

I'll be putting together 2 artpacks hopefully by Christmas. I would like to know what developers' preferences are.

Would you like to either buy an artpack that is a buy once option - meaning you get the copyrights to the work and I only retain the right to use the artwork for my portfolio? Or would you rather pay to just use the artwork but putting up with others having the same artwork in their games as well?

We must share a brain :)

so would you only sell and art pack to 1 person?

    That's what I would prefer.

It's harder to control artwork that is sold and used for a fee. In my opinion. You always have to watch that no one is sharing it. Selling it once, eliminates this. However the buyer has to be serious and even with buy once, there can be no refunds. It's their puppy.

But, I'm curious as to see what most devs prefer.

I did not see such an announcement. Is GameSalad Inc looking to buy/sell game artwork?

Personally, I prefer to have exclusive artwork for my games, but that depends on how much the artwork costs. A lot of my games use artwork from Daz3d.com, which is not exclusive — but really cheap.

If the artwork isn't exclusive, then it is conceivable that a lot of the GameSalad games will look the same.
