DPI

Hi,
Just three quick questions:
1. Will there be any change in the game (like better performance or better quality of images) if all graphics are 72 dpi? Now I have 96 dpi.
2. Is there any quick way to change dpi of many images?
3. How to change images dpi WITHOUT Photoshop or other paid apps?

Thank you very much.

Sorry Chaser, I'll try to work on that.

Thanks tshirtbooth, could you (or someone else), also answer these two questions:
    2. Is there any quick way to change dpi of many images?
    3. How to change images dpi WITHOUT Photoshop or other paid apps?

    Thank you very much.

    Thank you for help.

Just one more thing if I may: I red that DPIs are for printing. Could anyone explain to me why is it so important to have images with 72 dpi? I really don't get it.

    Thank you.

I don't know if it handles DPI, but I used Automator (included with my Mac) to resize images. That thing is awesome.

I used to use Fireworks for batch processing, but I only have the PC version. As mentioned in my One Week Later - How's Mac Life article, I've been looking for replacements for my PC software. Basically, a suitable CS4 replacement (and Halo) are the only major PC programs remaining.

Pages is actually a decent replacement to Indesign. I haven't found a Photoshop replacement. I'm not a big fan of GIMP. Heh, but I've been doing some cool tricks with "Preview".

DPI is only used for printing, it has no meaning whatsoever in video or any graphic content made to display on a monitor or screen.

The fact that GS requires a specific DPI is due to a bug in GS itself.

    Preview is totally underrated!

Thank you all for answers. I thought that you'd say: "It's a Jersey thing" :P but I'm glad to hear from you :)

I'm still wondering - if GS requires 72 dpi graphics, so why the heck I have 96 dpi graphics in my game project and everything is working well and quality is very good? I still don't get it.

at 96dpi GS will be displaying your graphics at 75% of full size so you will be loosing some of your carefully crafted pixels.

    Thanks a lot Rob!

I found great app for Windows, it's free and it can change DPI of many images at once - FastStone Photo Resizer.

    http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDownload.htm

Just choose your folder and drag it to the upper right window, than choose output folder, output format and click on Advanced Options, there go to DPI tab, click on change DPI and choose 72 in X-DPI and Y-DPI, then click ok, and Convert. After few minutes (depending on graphics amount - for me (almost 1000 graphics) it took 2.30 min) you will get all your graphics with 72 dpi.

    Great tool! :)
