picture size dpi etc not working

BramHoddssdBramHoddssd Member Posts: 414
I made my character on inkscape and made the size dividable by 4. When i was gonna export it as a png i tried to change the dpi to 72 like people said to do. But when i did that it changed the image size. Then when i put GS to 'resolution independents' my drawings are really small. How do i make my image the size i want for resolution independents with dpi at 72?

In Photoshop, you would use the Image Size dialog to change the dpi. In that dialog, you can uncheck "Resample Image" and it will retain the image's size while changing the dpi.

Unfortunately, Inkscape only lets you change the dpi when you Export it as a bitmap. And the size is directly tied to the dpi.

My recommendation is just to export your image at the standard Inkscape dpi (96?) and use a different program like Photoshop to change the dpi to 72.

I'm not sure of a free program that will do that? If you are comfortable with X11 programs, maybe GIMP can do it?

If money is an issue, I would recommend a free online painting program like www.sumopaint.com and you can avoid some of this hassle.

just use OS X Preview...Tools - Adjust Size (make sure resample is unchecked and set resolution to 72)

Oh, Preview can do it? Yes, use that.

ppi and dpi are essentially the same, and actually meaningless in this case. They only matter for printers. It's just that either Apple or GS require .png files to be set to 72dpi to work correctly.

Ideally, you will originally create all your images at 72dpi, and not have to resample them at all.
