iPhone to iPad Conversion

I'm in the process of converting Egg Drop Soup from iPhone (pre iPhone4) to iPad.

When I submit it to Apple should I submit as a new app or and update to my old one?

Also, my game is made for portrait orientation and uses the accelerometer. Do I need to make sure it will play in Portrait and Portrait Upside Down?

You should submit as a new app and yes make sure the Portrait Orientation is for the upside down too.

So if I submit as a new app will people who bought it as an iPhone app and installed on their iPad have to buy it again?

Ya it will be in the iPad Section

Yes, they will need to rebuy it.

Your app already works on the iPad through pixel doubling. Because of this, Apple will generally reject your app if you simply upsize the graphics. You will usually need to add more content to the iPad version.

To avoid the above problem of people having to rebuy an app, or for you to create new content, Apple suggests bundling both versions into a 'universal app', which GS cannot currently do.

So the orientations need to be checked for both ie landscape left and landscape right?

Good to know if that's the case.

    Yes, for EVERY Scene.

The Universal App really answers my question because I just got an iPad and several of the apps that I'd installed on my iPhone were iPad apps when I synched my iPad. They weren't centered in the iPad like iPhone apps do.

So, another question...If I submit the upscaled version of my iPhone app and call it HD do you think Apple will reject it?

If you dont make it at least a little different than the iPhone version, then they will generally reject it. Apple doesnt want people to pay for the same app twice.

I haven't been checking both at all..

Seems like a while back they were really fussy about supporting multiple orientations but that seems to have gone away for games.

Of course anything can happen but i have had more issues of the autorotate frustrating people.

On a video review of Buggies HD the game flipped in the middle of the review and the reviewer thought it was a feature of the game but couldn't figure out why all the text was upside down though ><

    50/50 from what i see

I would try it though since we cant do universal apps in GS... Total pain to make anyways.
Plus with universal it really screws up the ranks

Iphone goes to iphone ranks ipad to ipad.... however if they download on the desktop it goes to iphone ranks. It gets messy but the other issue is with a universal app you have to submit a "FAT" binary if you want to work on older iphones and ipods.

Its the whole arm6 arm7 thing.

A 17meg app ends up being 30 megs unless you only want it to run on ipad and newer iphones.

I recently made a universal binary and it was a NIGHTMARE and i dont even know if it will pay off. We'll see i guess....

I wish apple would just accept the fact that paying .99 cents twice is not the end of the world. I realize they want the custies to have a good experience but if an app cant make money whats the point......

they will NEVER enforce that guideline with gameloft lol
