Hello All,

Woo! After a few delays and not enough hours in a day - GSLearn is now back with some great new changes.

For anyone that is interested in following my works - You can now in a (Hopefully) easier way. It also turns out its a little bit harder to re-structure a website by yourself so I appreciate any feedback. It is an on-going process, but I did manage to get enough done so you can have access to my new works!

What are the Changes?

I have always wanted to focus on providing little ideas or learning resources for the community. With everything, a price tag often scares away people. How can you provide higher quality free work and still make it within reasonable time?
With Add-Ons!!

Almost every new template (They should all be free), you can download the core logic for the mechanism. Thats the part where most of the learning takes place. However, if you wish to have more levels, designs, better documentation or even personal tutoring for these templates. You can purchase ad-ons packs.

How does this even work?
Very simple, almost all templates are designed using tables to easily create and store levels / challenges within one scene. When you purchase or download a add-on pack, you will get CVS files that can be imported straight into the template and work.

Whats even better, is that it give me more flexibility to release these extra levels or content, so waiting between template release is shorter! And content can continuously be provided (free or paid) to templates without affecting any progress you have made.

The most important thing is that it doesn't affect the actual gameplay / logic! You still get all that for free.

Plus - if you have spare time, or interested in level building. You are more than welcome to create your own Add-On pack and sell it on the website. Just get in touch!

What has been released so far?
I have shared a few demos of what I have been working on recently. As of now, you can download the Unblock Me demo. (Ad-ons coming later in the week) and the New Clocks of Time template (Ad-ons coming later). There is a lot of smaller helpful templates for beginners coming very soon.

Overall - Hopefully by providing access to all templates for free, and only providing paid options for those who want to save time / creative materials can do so.

Again, still slowly updating the website - and at this point in time, you can still access any previous GSlearn template.

Let me know your thoughts! - and all the best with development!

How to: Create Indexed Actors from Prototype

Hi all, sharing this method in case it helps someone.

One of the common restraints with Gamesalad is that you cannot easily index your spawned actors. This makes logic and pathfinding difficult for a lot of genres of games, and people are using some pre-setup actors and instances which limits the scope of what you can do.

For example, take a strategy game (tower defense, turn-based grid, RTS, whatever). In Gamesalad, most approach this by creating 10+ tower actors, and each actor is unlocked, with logic running. This gets difficult if you want to do things with other "spawned" logic actors, like monsters, units, etc. Something as straight forward as showing individual unit's health can become messy.

The solution:

I have made a few "complex" strategy game systems using a workaround method. It's fairly straight forward.

Your prototype unit is the master "template" for all units created. let's call it "Unit_Prototype".

Spawn your "Unit_Prototype" using another actor (a level controller, a button that spawns units, whatever you want). Important: The X attribute where you spawn this actor will become it's ID.

In your Unit_Prototype, set up a rule that makes this happen: On spawn (i like rule: self.time = 0), set a [self.selfID (you can call this whatever you want)] attribute to self.position.x

This is also where you could load values to this unit. For example, reference table values that control stats, images, movement speed, etc.

This is where you can add rows to a Table that can handle all unique stats for this unit. [Self.selfID] would point to a table row that holds all stats you care about -- Health, position, whatever.

Add some code to move this unit to wherever it should be (adjust the x/y, etc)

You now have an indexed unit with unique stats.

That's basically it. I can upload a demo if it would help.

In this project, a grid turn-based strategy game, I use this concept to: spawn a bunch of peasents who pathfind to the nearest tree, and then start "harvesting" the tree.

Each peasant has its own X,Y, pathfinding logic, health, power, resources gathered, etc.

Each tree has its own "supply" that is drained when peasents attack it. And so on.

I can spawn 10 peasents or 100 peasents, it all works just fine. I can spawn 1 tree or 50 trees, they are distributed at random. Doesn't matter. All peasents pathfind to the nearest spawned tree.

Some things to note:

You have to rely on tables heavily to do anything meaningful with this, and specifically functions like tableSearch and tableCellValue

table functions are a bit weird. In particular, inserting or deleting rows can cause bugs. So I would suggest you instead create a table with your "maximum" number of units you want to allow, and 0 it out. Instead of adding rows, just change values at the first row with a 0.

your prototype actor for units is going to be big. You have to have all the logic you want the unit to use in there, for each variation, so be aware.

There's tons of other uses for this type of thing, the immediate use for me is strategy game, but I am sure there are lots of ways to use table-linked spawned actors

Performance will drop the more things you spawn, but that's an issue for most engines and games -- that's why RTS games have unit caps. It depends on how much logic you put in to each actor, and how heavy they are. Probably best for turn-based games, but I have made a few real-time games that work well until I get in the hundreds of actors. So worth considering, you would want to make sure your code can "recycle" previously used IDs if necessary.

Hi guys,

I have an issue with spawning actors. I want to spawn the same the same actor (let’s call it checkbox) 5 times in random locations but in the following order:

actor spawns

destroyed when collide with main actor

Spawn same actor spawns to random location

destroy/spawn/destroy/spawn 5 times

after the fifth time skip to next screen

I have created a spawn actor that spawns my ‘checkbox’ to a random location. I have created an integer (Numberofitems) and created a rule within my spawn actor:

game.NumberofItems =/< 5

then

Spawn Checkbox

Change Attribute game.Numberofitems to (game.Numberofitems)+1

What it does is it spawns one “checkbox” in random location, but it does not respawn it after destroy. I tried to create Loop but I couldn’t make it work. I would ideally like to avoid creating a timer if possible.

It bugs me because I feel there should be a simple fix and yet I can’t make it work for the life of me. :( What am I doing wrong?

Ps - it's NOT a Tutorial, but probably the best place to put it...

After fruitlessly trying to make even a few pennies with pretty much ANY apps, even including Parcel Monkey/Courier Chaos, and sinking a LOT of time and money into mobile app dev, I've come to the conclusion that mobile dev is probably not for me, and that I'm just not doing something right...

As such, if anyone wants it, here's my first complete, published app - the complete project. Feel free to use it to re-skin, pull apart, modify and maybe re-launch, I honestly don't care, as LONG AS the main character gfx are replaced to avoid App Store confusion and issues (and DEFINITELY replace the music track, as I was only given kind permission to use it in Catflap!) - Other that that, it's a DWTHYLWI (Do What The Heck You Like With It!) arrangement...

Yes, it might LOOK like Flappy Bird, etc, but there is a TONNE more going on - different modes (try Rush!), grazing the ground, getting Catflap's beachball close to the pipes, right up in the air, catching butterflies (he's a cat, after all!), hitting Rufus, and combo's for consecutive tricks (think ie. 5,7,6 one after another, gives you a run (5,6,7), or more than 10 points per trick, repeated, giving HUGE bonus points. Anyway, there's a LOT of logic in there...

A little more info, and some nice feedback at least, here:-

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/catflap-full/id940880294?mt=8

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.japsterscavern.catflapfull

I'm guessing my fellow GS users could learn something from it, or maybe even get rich, ha ha! - but I warn you - the behaviours and logic in some of the areas (like tricks, etc) are complex and spaghetti-like... (It WAS my first learning exercise/app, in all fairness...)

Anyway, the usual applies - I'm not often on here nowadays, and I really can't afford the time to support it in terms of answering masses of questions, but I will try to answer a few from fellow GS'ers seriously trying to work with it.

PS - Unlike the App Store / Google Play previews, this runs SILKY smooth - if you're unsure as to how to affect the game / difficulty / local achievements and combo's etc, or wondering how my high scores tables are set etc, you'll find a LOT of tables in here - it's not for the faint-hearted, but I'm guessing more veteran GS'ers will get to grips with it, and no doubt laugh at my early (functional but scatty) code....

All the best guys!

Hey all,

One of my New Years Resolutions is to begin posting community project files and video tutorials. The last 6 months have been super busy and things are starting to slow down. Time to get back to it! We've created a new section on GSHelper.com which contains all of these tutorials so it's easy for you to find them.

This thread will contain all of the past and future tutorials and project files I create for the community. My hope is that both seasoned and not-so-seasoned GameSalad users learn at least a thing or two from my simple tutorials.

Sorry for the long, long, long thread! I feel bad for you people who have to scroll down to view new comments. \:D/

In this tutorial, I show you how to create a basic word game with writable tables. A lot of people still use dozens of game attributes for word games. With the introduction of writable tables, all of those game attributes are no longer needed. Take a look and follow this tutorial to better understand how to use writable tables.

This way a really fun project. I had gotten tons of emails and personal messages here on the forums for this baby.
Rotate the camera in any direction, and the gravity which is applied to the actor will continue to accelerate as if it’s direction is set to 270(down). This demo is simple, but fun to tinker around with. Two methods are supplied.

This is something I created that never really made it in one of our templates. Tired of using dozens of Constrain Behaviors for multiple objects on a Scene when you want to use the Magnitude function inside GameSalad Creator? Tired of having all of the attributes for the Constrains? Well no longer! With GSHelper Radar Detection, you can simply place an actor on the Scene, add a condition to an actor, and you’re set to go!

Use radar to inform the player if they are too close to something. A great example of using magnitude using Tables and Table to Table references within rules.

Press Preview. Sit back, watch and relax.

This demo checks to see if the word entered in the project is a word in the Answer table. While there are other ways to do this, this method uses the new Loop Behavior which is currently found in the Nightly Builds.

We did this webinar back in June of 2013. It was an awesome test to see how many people we could get to watch an hour + long tutorial. We were able to fit, if my memory is correct, just about 300 people in there. Great stuff.

Here’s the video of our very first GSHelper webinar. We provide the art file for you to download (click the link below to go to the product), and you get to build the COMPLETE game by watching and learning.

I created these tutorials when Universal Binaries were a new thing and were mysterious to the community. These tutorials served to show how to use a simple method to make sure any project worked on any iOS device. I can't take all of the credit for this one, though. Darren from DBA initially came up with the numbers for one of the iPhone projects. I just plugged in new numbers for each device.

They stretch, but depending on the type of game you're making, it may work out well for you. With some tweaking, these methods have helped me with several projects and they look great on the devices.

This was a nice tutorial. Can't take all of the credit -- someone, I believe @RThurman, posted the logic and gave me permission to create a video tutorial out of it so others could learn, too. Change an actor’s moving speed depending on how fast your swiping your finger.

Hi everyone, I'm very new to Gamesalad and I just finished creating Monster Maze by following the videos provided by the tutorial. Here's my question:

I am trying to add an extra level to the game. The first level works fine (by eating 3 candies and reaching the finish line) and triggers the new scene I created. But when I complete the same victory condition to the this new scene I created It doesn't trigger the same victory condition and move to the "You Win" scene. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance : )
